SmallHost - I invite you to review SmallHost

Recommended Posts

Hello! I made SmallHost, a free webhosting provider using MyOwnFreeHost. This is my first time using MyOwnFreeHost and I want your honest opinion of my host so I can make it better.

  • Free SSL (thanks to pichisdns)
  • CloudFlare is activated, so no DDoSes can be done!
  • Users get 5000MB Bandwidth and 1000MB disk at signup, they can earn more resources by spending time on SmallHost to upgrade their plan.
  • A pretty solid, lightweight client panel.
  • Customized control panel using WybeNetwork's themes.
  • A step-by-step documentation guide.
  • New! A better client panel.
  • New! Login with your mobile device by scanning a QR code.

Main site: https://smallhost.us.to

Client Panel: https://smallhost.us.to/clients/login.php

Sign Up: https://smallhost.us.to/register.php (step-by-step signup guide: https://docs.smallhost.us.to/docfiles/Create your SmallHost Account.php)

Log In: https://smallhost.us.to/my/auth.php (you can login to the File Manager and cPanel from there)

vPanel Direct Link: https://cpanel.smallhost.us.to

I'm still working on making things better, so let me know if you see anything I can do!

I like that you avertised my tool!

Thanks for creating the free SSL tool! I hope you're okay with SmallHost clients using it for their sites, let me know if you want me to take that guide down.

Change the signup form submit url and image url to https://ifastnet.com/register2.php  and https://ifastnet.com/image.php (leave the ?id=etc...).

I'm kinda confused when it comes to this part...the submit URL is https://order.smallhost.us.to/register2.php as that's the SmallHost registration form. I assume that https://ifastnet.com/register2.php is for iFastNet registration. When I tried changing it to https://order.smallhost.us.to, Firefox gave me this error...

Quote

Someone could be trying to impersonate the site and you should not continue.

Websites prove their identity via certificates. Firefox does not trust order.smallhost.us.to because its certificate issuer is unknown, the certificate is self-signed, or the server is not sending the correct intermediate certificates.

Error code: SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER

Would users still be able to register if I change the submit URL to iFastNet's registration endpoint? Just wondering.

In your SSL guide, also include the procedere for custom domains (add www to cert)

I just added that to the docs!

7 hours ago, BastelPichi2 said:

Your SSL guide somehow is a bit messed up - Correct that!

I don't see anything else wrong with the SSL guide, do you have any advice of what I can do to correct it?

7 hours ago, BastelPichi2 said:

In your signup form, remove the site category and language. Its not needed.

Removed it!

7 hours ago, BastelPichi2 said:

In your custom domain setup guide, you wrote subdomain.you.created/htaccess - but its subdomain.you.created/htdocs!

Oops, just fixed that!

On the create account docs page, include the images via https to remove mixed content warnings.

Included images with https!

Thanks for your advice! :D

You can, but you need to make a plan.

Sign into the MOFH Reseller Panel. Go to Quotas and Packaging > Set Packages. Select your domain then click Add/Change Plans. Click Add Plan for your.domain, then set a plan. You can set the amount of traffic (RAM) through there.

RAM Is Not Traffic , traffic is monthly bandwidth, and you can't edit PHP RAM. it only on Premium Hosting,Free Hosting Max PHP RAM is 128 MB

Can you force HTTPS on the cpanel for smallhost once someone registers etc?

That's one of the issues I have, I don't think its possible to force HTTPS. The cPanel does have HTTPS and when you click the Control Panel button on the Client Panel it will load with HTTPS, but sadly I don't know how to make it load by default.

Also is there any way you could improve the CSS in this section: https://smallhost.us.to/clients/p/home.php

I can help with it?

If you have any CSS code you want me to consider using, feel free to send them here or in the Discord. For security reasons, I don't feel comfortable giving my SmallHost login credentials.

I'll give my honest feedback on this site, I notice there are some problems.

  1. Everything is written very informally, for example, "we're never gonna give you up", this really doesn't seem professional. On top of that, you shouldn't be saying "I", for example, you said "I made SmallHost," again this is very informal.
  2. Barely an information given: The whole website is one page. All the links in the navbar belong in the footer. (Also you need a premium page otherwise you get suspended.) And the only page on your website barely lists any useful features (an online file manager, easy transfer to iFastNet, etc.), and most of them are downright lies (cPanel)
  3. Very misleading. You say "Free Green Padlock (SSL)" but you don't offer one. The speed test is also misleading. You don't actually test websites made on those hosts, you only test the host's website, which of course will be hosted on different servers. Also, InfinityFree is also powered by iFastNet, so claiming you're "faster" than them is a lie. Also (again), a few MS in speed makes literally no difference
  4. The terms of service are not written well, they are also extremely informal. The fact that Freenom is "on very thin ice with [you]" is actually kind of ironic because you use a free subdomain for your website, which in some regards, is even worse. And this is free hosting, most people are going to be using free subdomains/domains. Also, don't use "I" in the terms of service.
  5. The whole "coins" system. This is a host, why is there a currency system. And the fact that the only way to get coins is to join Discord is even worse. How many people wanting a website do you expect to have Discord? Discord is a chat for gamers. If you are going to include coins, include an official and automatic way of getting them.

Please, do fix these issues, I wouldn't trust handing over my money if I see a website that can't even get their facts straight.

However, there are good things about SmallHost: It (appears) to be aimed toward people just starting out. People with small websites or people with small businesses. It's good to have a target audience and have something you do really well. InfinityFree does this, they offer their hosting for more experienced users. Scala Hosting is known for their scalable hosting. Hostinger is known for their "cheap" shared hosting.

Please don't take this personally, I'm not trying to be rude,  but these are the first things I noticed as I came on this website. And chances are, it's what other people are going to notice too.

Thank you so much for your feedback! I understand your concerns and will be working on making changes to the site. SmallHost values user feedback and I appreciate your opinions.

  1. I used terms like "I" and "my" as I was the person who developed SmallHost at the time. As SmallHost now is growing a support team, I will change these terms to "we" and "our". As for the "we'll never give you up" line, I'll replace this with something more professional.
  2.  I will work on adding more useful information to the site. All the pages have links directly to iFastNet, however I will also be writing a dedicated page for that. The features I listed are quite useful. All MOFH resellers have a cPanel (SmallHost's is https://cpanel.smallhost.us.to, InfinityFree's is https://cpanel.epizy.com).
  3. SmallHost does provide Free SSL via a third-party provider. I have written a support article on how to do this. The speed tests are not misleading and they have been conducted without bias. I have linked the check-host.net link so you can run these tests for yourself. As for me claiming that SmallHost is faster than InfinityFree, that is part of the speed test. If it makes anything better, I will re-conduct the test and compare it to a host outside the MOFH network.
  4. I will do a rewrite on the ToS. As for me being "on thin ice" with Freenom, Freenom scams users--once their site gets traffic, it shuts their domain down. I will rewrite the Terms and use terms like "we" and "us". SmallHost would offer a free subdomain anyways, even if on a root domain. For example, if I bought smallhost.com, a user's site would be at sub.smallhost.com.
  5. SmallHost wants to build a community, that's why I integrated this system. To upgrade your account to get more resources, you'll need SmallCoins. As of now, the only way to do this is via the Discord bot in the server I made. It will take a long time for me to integrate a system into the SmallHost Client Panel directly. I will find a better way to integrate this, but now I'll let things run as they are. Just know that a new system is on the way!

I will fix these issues, however some things will take way longer than others. (For example, I can fix the ToS and homepage and add a premium page now, however making an entire new coin system will take time.)

I'd like to thank you for telling me good things I'm doing as it's really encouraging me to continue running the SmallHost project. Yes, SmallHost is intended for small sites (thus the name SmallHost as I never expected it to grow this big) and I'm proud of my target audience.

I did not take your constructive criticism as offensive at all, however a few points you made were incorrect (which I listed above, for your reference). I really appreciate you for taking the time to make SmallHost a better host. Let me know if you need anything else!

An update on my last message...

Here's what we done...

  • The site uses terms like "I", "we" and "us" now
  • The Rick Astley reference was removed and replaced with something more professional
  • The ToS uses terms like "I", "we" and "us" now
  • There is now a dedicated page about upgrading to iFastNet's premium plan

Here's what I'm planning...

  • Directly integrating the SSL tool using the API instead of linking to the tool directly
  • Make a new SmallCoin system
  • Do a full rewrite on the ToS to make it look more professional

This will take time to do. Just want to post an update on where I'm at now.

It is (unfortunetely) not the real cPanel. It's called the "VistaPanel" and it is a control panel that is basically a copy of cPanel.

The speed tests are fine, but you have to test a website created *on* that platform, not just the website itself.

so, for example, instead of testing cpanel.smallhost.us.to, you would test a website made *on* SmallHost: for example, speedtestwebsite.us.to. Make sure it's a complete website to and not just a blank page.

Actually, that's a good idea. Currently the subdomain users get is subdomain.subdomain.domain.tld.

Okay, thank you for letting me know. I'll need time, but I'll definitely get to rebranding that to VistaPanel instead of cPanel.

That may be a problem...SmallHost sites only allow 50k page hits a day and the speed test site I linked sends over 20 page hits to test it. I'll probably have to make another SmallHost account in order to do that (which can be done, but would take time). I'd also need to sign up for a competitors hosting platform to host a site there to test.

I am definitely looking into purchasing a domain, but I make no funds off of SmallHost at this time. As soon as I get a stable source of income I will definitely do this.

Again, I appreciate your feedback greatly.

Yeah, although small.host would be professional it costs too much...I'm looking into expanding SmallHost (such as upgrading the master SmallHost account to an unlimited iFastNet plan to get more daily page hits and purchasing a domain), but SmallHost isn't currently making anything financially. I am trying to figure out how to pay taxes and how to join an ad network (preferably one that doesn't show any questionable ads) and I'll use that money to buy a domain, upgrade the master account and more.

As of right now, there's no ETA on when I'll do this. If all goes well, I may have SmallHost up and running on a .org domain with ads within the next sometime between a few months to a few years.
