Interesting, attempted that on notification of site setup completion and received authorization errors.  Just now, worked fine.  Thank you for the suggestion.  Works!!

unexpected behavior.  So, renamed index1.html to indexBak1.html
renamed default.html to index1.html
now get a dir list (no default page is active) .. so back to my original question, where in Cpanel is the default page specified?

The default file should be ideally index.html, otherwise in this server index2.html might also work (however it is not recommended as that should be reserved for the default file only).

As for where it is specified, it's not somewhere in cPanel, but rather in an .htaccess file. You can check more about how to change the default setting here:
